SCA in the News: Introducing the SCA Journey Podcast: Episode #3 Emily Pringle

This month, we had the pleasure of welcoming Emily Pringle to the third episode of the SCA Journey Podcast. Emily’s remarkable story takes her from her early days playing soccer in the U.S. to competing at two prestigious universities and now starting her professional career with Brisbane Roar in the A-League Women.

Key Highlights from the Podcast

From California to Australia:

Emily shares her fascinating journey as a dual citizen of the U.S. and Australia. Born in California, she moved to Sydney as a child and later returned to the U.S. Although she spent most of her formative years in America, Emily kept strong connections to Australia through annual visits to her family in Kiama. Now, as a professional player in Brisbane, she describes living and playing in Australia as “a dream come true.”

Youth Soccer in the U.S.:

Emily reflects on her early soccer experiences in the U.S., starting with recreational leagues before moving on to competitive club soccer. Unlike the Australian high school-focused system, club soccer in the U.S. is crucial for college recruitment. Emily explains how showcase tournaments became key moments in her journey, providing opportunities to connect with college coaches. Her determination—including reaching out to coaches directly—eventually secured her a spot at the University of Pennsylvania.

Collegiate Achievements at Penn:

Emily’s experience at the University of Pennsylvania was filled with academic challenges and competitive soccer. She shared the unique struggles of balancing Ivy League academics with athletics, highlighting how rewarding the experience was. Penn allowed her to grow both on and off the field, surrounded by peers who valued success in academics and sports alike.

A Championship Culture at UCLA:

In her fifth and final collegiate year, Emily made the move to UCLA, joining one of the top Division I soccer programs in the nation. Arriving just after UCLA’s national championship victory, she describes the atmosphere as both fiercely competitive and incredibly supportive. Training sessions at UCLA were carefully designed to enhance game-day performance, and the coaching staff’s openness and encouragement played a crucial role in her development.

Navigating the NWSL Draft and Joining Brisbane Roar:

After her collegiate career, Emily entered the NWSL Draft but shifted her focus to professional opportunities in the A-League Women. Showing remarkable independence, she took charge of her own recruitment by reaching out to A-League coaches and ultimately connecting with Brisbane Roar. She attributes her proactive approach and determination as essential elements in her transition to professional soccer.

Advice for Aspiring Athletes

Emily’s journey highlights the significance of persistence, adaptability, and fostering strong relationships with coaches. She advises young athletes to look beyond facilities and prestige during the recruitment process, emphasizing the importance of team culture and communication with coaches. “Team culture and the relationship with your coach are everything,” Emily states. “I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have supportive environments at Penn, UCLA, and now Brisbane Roar.”
